Rituals of Motherhood

It's 2017..A new year, a new beginning. I am a mother as well as pediatrician so like many of you, I spent some part of the holidays home with my children. With schools being closed for the holiday season, we had plenty of family bonding time. While these precious moments spent together have created lasting memories, there are occasions where I found myself exhausted. If your house is anything like ours, the kids like to go to sleep late and wake up early. Each morning, I wake up early to get a few moments of quiet to meditate before the hectic day as a mom begins.

So my take home to you parents is find those moments of peace to center yourself either through prayer, meditation, or just a quiet moment before you give yourself to your world.

Happy New Year

Rituals of Motherhood:

Each morning I take a long deep breath

Slowly open my eyes as I adjust to the darkness

It’s always early

The house is still and quiet I can Sometimes hear the rain splashing against the windows Or The wind lashing against the trees Or The quiet interrupted by an airplane on a flight going somewhere… Each morning I take a long deep breath and pray In the stillness of that morning I have a dialogue with God Without even opening my mouth I let my mind Escape Travel and sit in a peaceful place with Him My body soon starts to tingle as anxiety, fear, and stress creep upon me As these sensations become more real I quickly unload them like an assembly line worker Or Laborers unloaded freight off a train I feel peace from somewhere… Each morning I take a long deep breath As I remove the covers, sit up- I lay one foot down then the other on the floor I become grounded In the reality of the day Unexpected, unanticipated, undisclosed surprises, challenges, crisis await me Perhaps seconds away, maybe hours from now In the stillness of this moment I am ready… I hear the baby crying The day begins…
